Student Expectations

Prepared

Students are expected to be prepared with materials for every lesson.  This includes the instrument, all music, reeds/pencil/valve oil/neck strap/drum sticks/etc, and any other items needed in order to have an effective lesson.

Organized

Students are expected to have their music organized and neat.  This may include a binder with page protectors if the student has loose leaf music or a folder.

Practice

Students are expected to be musically prepared for every lesson.  This means practicing consistently throughout the week.

Parent Expectations

Involved

Parents are expected to be positively involved with their student's practice time.  This means positively encouraging them while they are practicing, asking them to put on a home recital, asking about what they are learning for the week, and helping your student set a practice routine.

Below is a weekly practice guideline for parents and students to follow through the week for the AVERAGE student and their age range that I recommend.  This is not for every student.  Some students need less practice time and some need more.  Every learner is different and that is OKAY!

  • Ages 3-5

    • 4-5 times a week

    • 5-10 minutes at a time

    • Primarily exploring the piano and it's patterns/sounds/...

  • Ages 5-7

    • 4-5 times a week

    • 10-15 minutes at a time

  • Ages 8-11

    • 4-5 times a week

    • 15-30 minutes at a time (a break may need to be included)

  • Ages 12-15

    • 4-5 times

    • 30 minutes at a time (include small brain breaks!)

  • Ages 15-18

    • 3-6 times a week (depending on material and schedule)

    • 30-60 minutes at a time (include small brain breaks!)
